Foundation

Protection of the planet’s endangered biodiversity ultimately will depend on finding ways for local communities to profit from their natural resources without harming them. Indigo Foundation’s approach is to develop community-run ecotourism enterprises and ensure more sustainable livelihoods in fragile natural areas.

Indigo Foundation works with rural communities in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop alternatives to unsustainable fishing, farming, logging, and other threatening activities. The Foundation can help with a range of activities that link economic success to conservation, from launching a full-scale ecotourism business to training nature guides and building new trails.

Indigo commits to communities on a long-term basis; financial support is only one of many components provided to ensure lasting impact. To launch locally run ecotourism programs in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Honduras, for example, Indigo will provide training in everything from market assessment and business operations to marketing and customer service. These businesses are designed to help local entrepreneurs compete in a global tourism market.

With the support of several partners, Indigo will empower people in some of the world’s most biodiverse areas – giving them better control over their livelihoods and their community’s valuable natural assets.

The Indigo Foundation provides financial support for practical projects run by local organizations and indigenous peoples associations. These projects aim to secure their rights and livelihoods and to protect and sustainably manage tropical rainforests.
